How Hormonal Imbalance Affects fertility

by Fertility, Men, Women0 comments

Hormones are chemical messengers that are directly secreted into the blood and are carried by the blood to the organs and tissues where they exert their function. These hormones regulate growth, reproduction, and other processes. It has been said that most infertility problems are due to hormonal imbalance. Infertility caused by hormonal imbalance is due to either too much or too little hormones produced.

Hormonal imbalance is something that is common among female folk. It is said that about two-thirds of female infertility cases are due to hormonal imbalance.  It causes female infertility by disrupting ovulation and preventing the thickening of the uterine lining, thereby preventing proper implantation. Women with a history of taking birth control pills have a higher chance of experiencing hormonal imbalance. This is because most contraceptive pills work by tampering with the hormonal balance of the female reproductive system. Often, hormonal imbalance is not diagnosed until an individual experience infertility. Women with hormonal imbalance experience one or more of the following:

– Absent or irregular periods

– Heavy or painful periods

– Increased hair growth on the face, neck, chest, and back.

 Vaginal dryness

– Painful intercourse.

However, there are some natural hormonal changes that occur, and prevents conception. Some of these natural hormonal changes occur during:

-Puberty

-Pregnancy

-Breastfeeding

-Menopause

On the flip side, men also experience hormonal imbalance, although they are less likely to experience it.  Testosterone is a hormone that plays a major role in the sexual development of men. Inadequate production of this important hormone may cause fertility problems. Men who do not have sufficient testosterone often experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Development of breast tissues
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Infertility
  • A decrease in beard and body hair growth
  • Loss of muscle mass
