Yeast infection is one of the most common infection women complain about when it comes to their reproductive health.

Indeed, most of the time vaginal yeast infections develop due to factors that throw off the microbial balance of the vagina.

Knowing the symptoms of yeast infection, what you can do to reduce your exposure to it, and other things you need to do on your conception journey are some of the things we’ve talked about in the article…

Let’s get to it…

What exactly is a yeast infection?

Yeast infection is the introduction of bacterias to the vagina, antibiotics, heat in the genitals and stress are some of the common causes of yeast infection and they cause changes in the PH of your vagina.

Yeast Infection symptoms may include:

  • Itching and irritation in the vagina,
  • A burning sensation during sex or while urinating,
  • Vaginal pain
  • Rash and abnormal vaginal discharge.

Having unprotected sex with a female partner who has a vaginal yeast infection is the leading cause of yeast infection in men.

  • Burning and itching around the head of the penis, which worsens after having sex
  • Redness and swelling
  • Small, rash-like bumps called papules, which may have pus
  • Pain during urination or sex

Normal white vaginal discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick-white discharge could indicate a yeast infection.

Here a few tips that can help you prevent yeast infections:

1.  Avoid tight-fitting jeans and pants. Stay cool, dry and airy. Allow fresh air flow down there.

2. Wear cotton underwear – Yeast thrives in damp environments. Cotton absorbs moisture and perspiration better and this will help keep yeast infections at bay.

3. Make sure you wipe from front to back after using the bathroom to prevent movement of bacteria from the anus to the vagina.

4. Relax and reduce stress. Research has shown that women who overly stressed have higher chances of getting yeast infections. Stress reduces the body’s immune system. It is advisable to always eat properly and rest well.

5. Keep yourself clean. Change out of your sweaty clothes and wipe yourself dry after a bath so you won’t be creating a damp environment for yeast to thrive.

6. Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics especially for colds or other viral infections. Broad spectrum Antibiotics are meant to kill bacteria but they also kill healthy bacteria in the vagina leading to overgrowth of yeast organisms. Antibiotics should only be used when it is necessary.

When should you be worried?

Yeast infection causes changes in the PH of your vagina, such as hormonal changes.  Candida yeasts, when they are left untreated, grow out of control, causing infection. most times, they usually lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

However, if you are trying to become pregnant and have an active infection, it should be treated because it can delay or prevent pregnancy.

PID can cause damage to the tubes which then affect the ability of the sperm to reach the egg, thereby preventing fertility.

The reason for this is not clear, but because a yeast infection affects the pH of the vaginal secretions, it may make the vagina unfriendly to sperm.
