CAUSES OF PCOS – POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME
The most common symptoms of PCOS include irregular menstruation, acne, facial hair, heavy or scanty menstruation, etc. The real cause of PCOS is actually unknown. Although, PCOS is usually linked to abnormal levels of certain hormones. Many women with PCOS are found to have an imbalance of hormones such as:
– TESTOSTERONE: This hormone is considered to be a male hormone. It is responsible for the development of facial hair, increased bone and muscle mass, etc. in men. All women also have a very little amount of testosterone BUT women with PCOS usually have abnormally high amounts of testosterone.
– INSULIN – Insulin regulates how the body uses and stores glucose. High levels of insulin cause the ovaries to produce too much testosterone, which interferes with the development of the follicles (the sacs in the ovaries where eggs develop) and prevents normal ovulation.
– LUTEINISING HORMONE (LH): This hormone is responsible for stimulating the release of egg from the ovary during ovulation. Women with PCOS usually have very high levels of LH. This may have an abnormal effect on the ovaries.
– SEX HORMONE-BINDING GLOBULIN (SHBG): SHBG is a protein present in the blood. Its main function in women is to bind to testosterone and reduce the effect of the testosterone produced by the body. Women with PCOS often have low levels of SHBG.
– PROLACTIN: The hormone – prolactin is responsible for production of breast milk during pregnancy. This hormone is meant to be released during pregnancy and lactation, but Some women with PCOS have elevated levels of prolactin in their blood.
We do not know the exact reason why these hormonal changes occur. Several studies have suggested that the problem may start in the ovary itself, or from the brain which controls the production of different hormones in the body. The changes may also be caused by the resistance to insulin. In other cases, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) may run in families. If any relative, perhaps your mother, sister or aunt, has PCOS, then your risk of developing it is high.
For women trying to conceive, EVERGREEN FORMULAR FOR WOMEN is a dietary supplement widely recommended in the treatment of infertility caused by PCOS.
