Some drugs and treatments can make it difficult to get pregnant. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for over a year without any luck, it is important to speak with a healthcare personnel. Here are some medications/treatments that can affect your fertility as a woman.
1. Marijuana:
Marijuana contains a chemical called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is responsible for most of its psychological effects. 2. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS):
NSAIDS are drugs used to treat mild to moderate pain, inflammation and fever. Examples are aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, etc. The most common side effect of NSAIDS is related to gastrointestinal ulcers. However, these drugs may also interfere with the release of a mature egg, leading to ovulation failure.
3. Drugs that raise prolactin levels:
Some drugs like cimetidine, chlorpromazine, procholorperazine, risperidone, methyldopa, metoclopramide can raise prolactin levels. This can affect ovulation and reduce fertility in women.
4. Radiation therapy:
Radiation therapy aimed at reproductive organs could increase the risk of fertility problems
5. Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy drugs can cause ovarian failure which could become permanent.
Some other drugs like sirolimus, tacrolimus and antirheumatic drugs like hydroxychloroquine or methotrexate may also affect ovaries but they have not been well studied long-term.
