RISK FACTORS FOR MISCARRIAGE

by Fertility0 comments

Risk factors for miscarriage are traits, behaviors or conditions that increase a person’s likelihood of having a miscarriage. There are different risk factors for miscarriage which I will be discussing. They include the following:

  1. Age: Age is a risk factor for miscarriage. Studies have been able to show that the risk of miscarriage is 12% to 15% for women in their 20s. Women older than age 35 are at a higher risk of miscarriage that the younger women. At age 35, the risk is about 20%. The risk is about 40% at age 40 and at age 45, it is about 80%. Fertility generally declines with age.
  2. Previous miscarriages: Research has been able to show that women who have had two or more miscarriages are at a higher miscarriage risk.
  3. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can increase the risk for miscarriage as they can be passed to the foetus during pregnancy, leading to damage of the foetus
  4. Obesity: Obesity is another risk factor for miscarriage. Obesity during pregnancy does not only put you at a higher risk of miscarriage, still birth and recurrent miscarriage, it also outs you at risk of various pregnancy complications which include gestational diabetes, C-section complications, preeclampsia (pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure, and signs of damage to the kidney and liver) and cardiac dysfunction.
  5. Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of early miscarriage and stillbirth. It puts the health of you and your baby at risk as it contains harmful chemicals. Smoking can increase your risk of pregnancy complications as well.
  6. Cervical or uterine problems: Weak cervix (cervical incompetence) and certain uterine abnormalities can out you at a risk of miscarriage
  7. Diabetes: As the body is fueled by glucose, insulin is vital to the proper functioning of the body system. Poorly controlled blood sugar can lead to pregnancy complications. Diabetes can increase risk of miscarriage if it is not controlled or treated on time.
  8. Alcohol: Alcohol present in the mother’s blood can be transferred to the baby through the umbilical cord. It increases the risk of miscarriage, still birth, and a range of lifelong behavioural, physical and intellectual disabilities.
  9. Trauma: Trauma caused by physical injury, car accident or a bad fall can put you at a risk of miscarriage as it could lead to spontaneous foetal death if the uterus or placenta is severally affected.
  • Certain medications: Certain medications which can increase your risk for miscarriage include the following:

  • Retinoids: Used for acne and eczema
  • Misoprostol and methotrexate: Used for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Such as ibuprofen are used for inflammation and pain.

If you are prone to these risks for miscarriage explained above, you should seek proper treatment from your Doctor so as to stay healthy during pregnancy. You should also take supplements like Evergreen natal care. It contains the recommended vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in the right proportion to maintain a safe and healthy pregnancy. If you are older and trying to get pregnant, you should go for fertility supplements such as Evergreen Eggboost. Evergreen EggBoost is a reproductive support dietary supplement that contains a combination of vitamins and antioxidants which have been scientifically proven to improve the quality of a woman’s egg. It helps the egg cells produce the energy needed for successful conception and implantation. You should go for Evergreen formular for women also. It balances your reproductive hormones and optimizes the reproductive tissues for pregnancy to occur. You should get Evergreen CM as well. Evergreen CM is a cervical mucus supplement which can strengthen the uterine lining in preparation for pregnancy.
